Augusta Technical College and Local Nonprofit Band of Brothers, Inc. Announce Juneteenth Augusta Celebration


Augusta, GA, May 9, 2022

Augusta Technical College is pleased to announce a community collaboration with Band of Brothers Augusta, Inc. to celebrate Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of the last remaining group of African-Americans slaves in 1865. It marks the first anniversary of the day that African Americans first learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, more than two years after it was initially issued. It is also often observed for celebrating African-American culture.

Augusta Technical College's schedule of events include:

  • Hosting a program on the Augusta Campus in the Information Technology; Guest Speaker will be Baruti Tucker, Owner of Humanitree
  • Art show
  • Dance performance by Icandy University Dance Group
  • 20-30 minute panel discussion & a short video giving a brief history of Juneteenth
  • Community Service Day
  • Backyard Festival in the Cougar Quad on the Augusta Campus including a DJ, vendors, and community groups and more.

Band of Brothers Augusta, Inc. will host their 6th Annual Juneteenth Augusta Weekend Celebration. This year's festivities will be held on Friday, June 17, at Mahogany Lounge, Juneteenth Edition at Paine College Heal Complex at 8pm; Saturday, June 17, Dayla at Jim Hudson Infiniti at 6pm (Augusta Technical College President Dr. Jermaine Whirl will be the keynote speaker), and Sunday, June 19, Festival at Augusta Commons at 12 noon.
