Augusta Technical College School of Cyber and Design Media
opens student operated Security Operations Center at the
Georgia Cyber Innovation & Training Center
Augusta, GA - August 30, 2023
The Augusta Technical College School of Cyber and Design Media is delighted to announce the establishment of the first student operated Security Operations Center (SOC) Lab, located within the Augusta Technical College suite at the Georgia Cyber and Innovation Training Center.
The SOC serves as an invaluable platform for students to gain hands-on, real-world experience in a Security Operations Center environment. Here, they analyze network traffic meticulously, seeking anomalies that may hint at malicious activities occurring on the Internet. Additionally, students will acquire the skills to utilize SOC tools, identifying vulnerabilities on both end devices and the network itself.
Distinguished leaders from government, education, and the cybersecurity industry attended the opening. Dean Tammy O’Brien warmly welcomed all attendees and introduced faculty member Mr. Dederick Scott, who spoke about the the SOC's significance and its pivotal role in preparing future cybersecurity professionals.
The highlight of the event was the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a task carried out by College President Dr. Jermaine Whirl, symbolizing the official commencement of our SOC's operations.
"Augusta Tech is proud to be the first institution in the Technical College System of Georgia to have a student operated SOC. I commend the faculty and staff of the School of Cyber and Design Media for their commitment to provide real-world hands-on learning environments for our students," stated College President Dr. Jermaine Whirl.
"This investment follows the school's recent implementation of the first Associate of Applied Science Degree in Cloud Computing and Solutions and an interdisciplinary degree with the School of Business: an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Accounting Cybersecurity; both a first in the State of Georgia. We look forward to additional innovations within the school for years to come."
We are thrilled about the possibilities this SOC offers our students and the broader cybersecurity community. It is a testament to our commitment to providing cutting-edge education in this critical field. Together, we stride forward into a future where cybersecurity expertise is paramount.
