Augusta Technical College Announces 2024 College
Rick Perkins Award Winner Sherrie Rowe

Augusta, GA - December 14, 2023

Sherrie Rowe, Department Head of Design and Media Production Technology and the 2024 RPA WinnerSherrie Rowe, Department Head for the Design and Media Production Technology program at Augusta Technical College, has been named the 2024 Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year award winner for the college. The announcement was made virtually via Facebook Live by College President Dr. Jermaine Whirl.

After being selected, Miss Rowe stated, "While obviously I am thrilled at being selected to represent Augusta Technical College as our RPA winner this year, I am humbled by the fact that a student has found value in what we do. It takes a great deal for a student to take time out of their busy day to remember how they were treated and nominate an instructor for this recognition. I appreciate that! I think all instructors would benefit in knowing that. What we do benefits not only the student but also their families.”

Sherrie Rowe has served Augusta Technical College since 1997 as department chair for the Design and Media Production Technology program in the School of Cyber and Design Media. Throughout her career at the college, she has developed a curriculum instructing students for successful careers in the printing, graphic design, and video production industries. Miss Rowe has also served as the primary SkillsUSA advisor, leading students to local, state, and national gold medals.

Miss Rowe was chosen by a panel of local leaders and was among 21 other nominees for the award. Other participating faculty nominees included Lopa Agarwal (School of Arts and Sciences), Jayson Akridge (School of Arts and Sciences), and Vicki Vandervelde (School of Business).

“The Augusta Tech community congratulates Miss Sherrie Rowe on her selection as this year’s RPA Winner,” stated College President Dr. Jermaine Whirl. “Miss Rowe has been a consistent champion of student success and has won many awards locally, statewide, and nationally for her advocacy of students’ professional development. The RPA designation highlights her teaching prowess and is fitting as she has impacted the lives of many students that have gone on to great careers in the design media industry. Once again, we congratulate Miss Rowe, and have no doubt that she’ll represent the institution well in TCSG state competition.”

The state winner will carry the title of Technical College System of Georgia’s Instructor of the Year and serve as the state’s ambassador for technical education. The winner exemplifies excellence and a commitment to the mission of the Technical College System of Georgia and makes many public appearances throughout the year, including addresses to the Georgia General Assembly, the governor and the TCSG Leadership Conference, to name a few. A $1,000 grand prize is also presented to the deserving award winner.

The Rick Perkins Award (RPA) for Excellence in Technical Instruction honors the Technical College System of Georgia’s (TCSG) most outstanding instructors. The award has been an ongoing statewide event since 1991 and is designed to recognize technical college instructors who make significant contributions to technical education through innovation and leadership in their fields. Formerly known as the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence, the award was renamed in honor and memory of Thomas “Rick” Perkins, an instructor at West Georgia Technical College.
